Riding Through History: Vespa Turns 80 in the Heart of the Eternal City

From a post-war dream to a global symbol of freedom and style, Vespa is gearing up for the biggest party in its history.

Vespa changed the world of urban mobility forever when an intuition on two wheels came to life eight decades ago. On April 23, 1946, Piaggio filed the patent for a “practical nature” vehicle designed to protect riders from mud and dust without sacrificing elegance. Born out of a courageous idea by Enrico Piaggio to help a post-war nation get moving again, the original 1946 Vespa 98 was democratic, accessible, and effortlessly stylish. It wasn’t just a scooter; it was a revolution that completely shifted how people navigated city streets.

Before its inception, personal transportation was either an expensive luxury for the wealthy or a heavy, purely utilitarian sacrifice. Vespa bridged that gap, providing an elegant solution that quickly became synonymous with Italian design ingenuity. Now, in 2026, the legendary brand is turning 80, and the celebrations are set to be nothing short of historic.

The Biggest Vespa Party Ever: Rome, 2026

Mark your calendars! To celebrate this monumental milestone, Vespa is hosting what is expected to be the largest gathering of fans in the brand’s history. From June 25th to the 28th, 2026, tens of thousands of Vespa enthusiasts from across the globe will descend upon the Eternal City of Rome, gathering at the Foro Italico Complex.

Rome is the perfect backdrop to honor an icon that has successfully reinvented itself while remaining a timeless symbol of youth, beauty, and the zest for life. Over four days of partying and events, including the spectacular Grand Parade on Saturday, June 27th, and the traditional Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, June 28th, the city will echo with the familiar buzz of generations of Vespas coming together. The event is open to everyone, and admission is completely free, drawing in both lifelong Vespa World Club members and curious travelers who happen to be in town.

The Commemorative “Vespa 80th” Series

You didn’t think Vespa would celebrate an 80th birthday without releasing something spectacular to ride, did you?

To honor the occasion, Piaggio unveiled the exclusive Vespa 80th series, featuring special editions of the beloved Vespa Primavera and the high-performance Vespa GTS 310. These models look back to their roots with an exclusive, evocative color scheme: Verde Pastello (also known colloquially as Verde 80th). This specific shade of pastel green was pulled directly from Vespa’s historical archives, inspired by the very first single-color models from the late 1940s, including the iconic Vespa 98, that took Italy and Europe by storm.

But the heritage details don’t stop at the paint:

  • Solid Wheel Rims: Reinterpreting the pressed-steel split rims of the original 1946 Vespa 98, these modern solid alloy rims feature a refined diamond-cut channel and proudly display the inscription “Est. 1946”.
  • Cooling Grille: A direct nod to the technical and stylistic origins of early models, featured on the left side panel of the Vespa Primavera 80th.
  • Exclusive Badging: The models feature a commemorative “80th” plate on the front shield and an “80 years of Vespa Est. 1946” badge on the rear backplate.
  • Premium Finishes: Seats feature non-slip material and dedicated stitching, adding comfort and a premium feel.

Despite their vintage aesthetic, the 80th series models are packed with cutting-edge technology, including Keyless systems, Remote Seat Opening, and a practical USB port. The GTS 310 specifically features a premium 5-inch TFT dashboard, while the Primavera features a crisp, full-color LCD dashboard. The GTS 310 model also includes the Vespa MIA connectivity system, bringing a piece of modern technology to a design deeply rooted in the past.

A Legacy of Culture and Creativity

Since its patent was filed, Vespa has evolved through countless models and sold millions of vehicles worldwide. But more importantly, it has woven itself into the fabric of global culture. It was the first vehicle to invent light urban mobility and offered a profound sense of independence, famously cemented by Audrey Hepburn in the 1953 classic Roman Holiday.

From the silver screen to the streets today, Vespa has proven it is as much a cultural icon as it is a mode of transport. It serves as an open canvas for artists, fashion houses, and freedom seekers alike, proving that masterclass engineering and beautiful design truly transcend generations.

📍 Expats in Italy Insider Tips

Traffic Alert (June 25–28): Expect heavy congestion and temporary rolling road closures around the Foro Italico complex and the major historic avenues. If you are trying to get across Rome this weekend and aren’t navigating on a scooter yourself, we highly recommend skipping the buses or taxis and sticking strictly to the Metro lines.

The Best Photo Op: The legendary Grand Parade takes off on Saturday, June 27th. For an unforgettable view away from the thickest street-level crowds, head up to the Pincio Terrace right above Piazza del Popolo. You’ll catch a perfect panoramic snapshot of thousands of colorful Vespas rolling through the piazza below!

As we gear up for the massive Rome takeover in June 2026, we celebrate more than just a scooter. We celebrate 80 years of Italian design, 80 years of continuous innovation, and 80 years of a global community united by the simple joy of the ride.

Buon compleanno, Vespa!
