CIE — Carta d’Identità Elettronica
Your Italian electronic ID card, issued by your local Comune. It’s also a digital key with a chip storing your biometric data and unlocking online public services.
To apply:
• Book your appointment online at agendacie.interno.gov.it
• Attend your Comune on the scheduled date with all documents
• An operator verifies your ID, scans your photo, and collects 2 fingerprints
• Pay €22.20 (usually by card at the counter)
• Your CIE arrives by registered post in approximately 6–7 working days
What you’ll need:
• Passport or current valid ID
• Valid Permesso di Soggiorno (non-EU citizens) or proof of registered EU residency
• Codice Fiscale (tessera sanitaria)
• One passport photo — 35x45mm, white or light grey background, taken within the last 6 months
💡 PIN/PUK tip: Your codes arrive in two separate envelopes alongside your card. Keep them safe — they are your gateway to Italy’s digital public services.
SPID — Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale
Italy’s national digital identity login system. Once activated, SPID unlocks thousands of online public services: INPS, Agenzia delle Entrate, Portale Immigrazione, Comune portals, and much more — all from your phone or computer.
How to activate SPID: Your CIE can be used to activate SPID directly via an NFC-enabled smartphone or PC card reader. No additional identity documents needed once your CIE arrives. This makes getting your CIE first the smart move.
Renewal: The CIE is valid for 10 years for adults. You can begin the renewal process up to 6 months before expiry — same process as the initial application.
⚠️ Note: Appointment availability and waiting times vary significantly between small towns and large cities. Always check your specific Comune’s website for local requirements and opening hours.
