Expat Social Swap Meetup – Connect, Exchange & Make New Friends with Expats, FAO, and WFP Employees!
Join us on Tuesday, June 24, for a special Social Swap Meetup, proudly sponsored by FirstMed Rome, an English-speaking clinic in Rome, and Teik, a utility rentals platform that also organizes swap events. This event is designed for expats and internationals in Rome to socialize in a casual, welcoming atmosphere, meet new people, and expand their network—all while swapping useful items!
For this special event, we’re sending invitations to FAO and WFP employees, making it a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow internationals, newcomers, and professionals in the community.
What Can Be Swapped
You can bring pre-loved items in excellent condition that align with a sophisticated and curated selection. The focus is on quality over quantity:
• Household items: Small decorative objects, ceramics, glassware, art prints, unique kitchenware, and design-oriented home accessories.
• Books: Art books, fashion magazines and international literature.
• Small electronics: Functional and modern gadgets in optimal condition (e.g., quality headphones, portable speakers).
Clothing and accessories: High-end, mid-range designer, quality vintage, bespoke items, or unique pieces from independent designers.
Make a cost-effective acquisition by obtaining valuable items without the expense of purchasing new ones—especially beneficial for those on a budget.

Swapping Rules
To ensure the refined standard and quality of this exclusive event, participants must adhere to the following guidelines:
• Quality Standard: All items must be clean, fully functional, and in excellent condition, free from stains, tears, significant wear, or defects.
• Item Evaluation & Credit System: Upon arrival, each item brought for exchange will be subject to an on-site evaluation by the organizing committee. This evaluation will assess both its quality and estimated value. Based on this assessment, participants will receive a corresponding amount of credit. These credits can then be used to “purchase” other items available at the event. Items not meeting the quality standards will not be accepted.
• Exclusion of Fast Fashion: To uphold our commitment to sustainability and quality, items from known fast fashion brands (e.g., Shein, H&M, Zara, Primark, Forever 21, etc.) are strongly discouraged and may be rejected upon inspection, unless they are unique vintage pieces in exceptional condition.
• Responsibility: Participants are responsible for bringing their own items and taking back any unswapped items (or remaining credits) at the end of the event.
• Material and Aesthetic Value: We encourage items made from quality materials (e.g., natural fibers, leather, silk, metal) and those demonstrating aesthetic or design value.
• Item Limit: (To be determined, e.g., max 5-10 items per participant) to ensure a focused and curated selection.
About Hummustown
Hummustown is a non-profit organization founded with the aim of providing a decent income for Syrian refugees seeking asylum in Italy. The project was launched in 2018, thanks to the ambitious vision of Shaza Saker, who was born in Damascus to Syrian parents and has been a resident of Rome for over 40 years.
As the number of Syrian refugees has declined over the years, Hummustown has adapted its mission to support other vulnerable communities, including refugees from various countries, victims of domestic abuse and violence, and economically marginalized Italians.
They have three locations where you can enjoy authentic Syrian cuisine: Hummustown Restaurant in Ostiense, Hummustown Bistrot near Circo Massimo, and Hummustown Kiosk at Piazza della Repubblica. In addition to serving delicious food, they also host wine tastings, organize social activities and initiatives to feed the homeless in Rome.
