Heatwave, Red Alert Still Active in Rome ❗

The Department of Epidemiology SSR Lazio Region, as part of the national operational system for forecasting and preventing heat-related health effects, coordinated by the Ministry of Health, has issued the heatwave bulletin which predicts Level 3 (red) for Rome on Friday, August 25, Saturday, August 26, and Sunday, August 27, 2023.

Please be reminded that for any requests for clarifications, information, and/or interventions, you can contact the Operational Room of the Civil Protection of Rome Capitale, which is active 24/7, at the toll-free number 800 854 854 or at the number 06 67109200.

What does Level 3 mean?

LEVEL 3: Heatwave (risk meteorological conditions persisting for several consecutive days). It indicates emergency conditions (heatwave) with possible negative effects on the health of both healthy and active individuals, not just those at risk such as the elderly, very young children, and people with chronic illnesses. The longer the heatwave lasts, the greater the expected negative effects on health.

Some essential measures to beat the heat and stay safe

1️⃣ Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep yourself hydrated. Carry a water bottle with you and sip on water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

2️⃣ Seek Shade: When outdoors, find shaded areas to avoid direct sunlight. Umbrellas, trees, or covered spaces can provide relief from the scorching sun.

3️⃣ Dress Appropriately: Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing in light colors that reflect sunlight. Loose-fitting and airy outfits help in maintaining body temperature.

4️⃣ Use Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Don’t forget to wear a hat and sunglasses to shield your face and eyes.

5️⃣ Plan Outdoor Activities Wisely: Limit your exposure to the sun during peak hours, typically between 11 AM and 4 PM. If possible, schedule outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon when the temperatures are relatively cooler.

6️⃣ Keep Your Living Space Cool: Use fans, air conditioning, or open windows during cooler hours to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Close curtains or blinds to block out direct sunlight.

7️⃣ Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Keep an eye on the elderly, children, and those with chronic health conditions who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Ensure they have access to cool environments and are staying hydrated.

Remember, your health and well-being are of utmost importance. By following these measures, you can enjoy the summer in Rome while staying cool and safe. Beat the heat and make the most of this beautiful city!
